Plainview Area Foundation grant committee members Corky Terrell (left) Mark Warren and Roy Kiser join Cindy Tye and Mary Ramos with Covenant Health Plainview in displaying some of the colorful blankets and pillowcases given to the pediatric patients through a foundation grant. The matching grant is used to purchase colorful fleece blankets which pediatric patients find on their bed when they arrive at their hospital room. Once settled, a nurse allows them to pick their own pillowcase. Both blanket and pillowcase are theirs to take home when the child is discharged. Nursing staff says having the personal items brings immediate comfort and calmness to young patients. Grant funds are used to purchase novelty-themed fabric for the pillowcases, with prints varied to fit each age group. Volunteers, including 4-H’ers, Evelyn Ball, Debbie Price, Carol Terrell, Sherrie Wall and Kayla Edwards have sewn more than 100 pillowcases. Matching funds come from Covenant employees who participate in “Jean Day.” They can wear jeans on Fridays in return for making a donation. During 2015, the hospital served 142 pediatric (under age 18) patients.
